What OOA is
The OOA room is a separate bedroom inside an SDA dwelling reserved for a support worker. It's counted separately from participant bedrooms and priced separately by the NDIA.
When it's used
OOA is common in homes where residents need overnight prompting, repositioning or emergency response — but don't need active 1:1 care all night. Sleep-over supports are more cost-effective than active overnight staffing.
How to spot it in a listing
Look for phrases like "2-bedroom + OOA" or "3+1 dwelling". Ask the provider whether OOA is currently staffed and by which SIL provider.
What to check
- Is the OOA bedroom private and lockable?
- How is worker fatigue managed?
- Are participants comfortable sharing communal space with a rotating worker?
