SIL guide

Choosing your SIL provider

NDIS participants keep choice and control over who delivers their supports, and SIL is no exception. In practice, choice looks different depending on whether you live alone or with housemates.

Living alone

You choose your SIL provider directly. If it isn't working, you can move to another.

Living in a shared home

One SIL provider usually covers the whole household. Changing that provider is possible, but it needs the household and the SDA provider aligned — otherwise continuity breaks down. If you're the only person in the household who wants to change, moving to a different home is often the more workable path.

Steps to change SIL provider

  1. Raise the concerns with your current provider first — many issues resolve here.
  2. Talk to your support coordinator about alternative providers with local capacity.
  3. If in a shared home, discuss with housemates and the SDA provider before committing.
  4. Sign a new service agreement, confirm handover dates, notify the NDIA if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use different SIL providers for different housemates?
In practice, no. Coordinated support in a shared home works when one provider runs the roster and escalation. Different providers per housemate creates safety and continuity risks.
