Choosing a SIL provider: a 12-point checklist

SIL agreements often run for years and represent one of the largest line items in an NDIS plan. Choosing the right provider matters. Use this 12-point checklist before you sign.

Before you shortlist

A good starting point is to compare SIL providers across your area on SIL Connect. You will see service models, coverage areas and vacancies side-by-side. From there, run through the checklist below with each candidate.

The 12-point checklist

  1. Registration. Are you NDIS-registered? Which registration groups?
  2. Roster model. Active-overnight, sleepover, or drop-in?
  3. Ratios. What is the day/evening/overnight worker-to-participant ratio?
  4. 1:1 hours. How many exclusive-support hours per week does my plan buy?
  5. Housemate matching. How do you match housemates, and can I meet them first?
  6. Continuity. How many workers will I typically see per fortnight? Any core team?
  7. Rostering flexibility. How do you handle changed appointments, holidays, hospital stays?
  8. Behaviour support. Do you work with my BSP practitioner, and can you follow a positive behaviour plan?
  9. Medication. Who administers, records and audits medication?
  10. Communication. How do families and coordinators get updates? What's the escalation path?
  11. Complaints. What is your complaints process, and how long does resolution take?
  12. Exit. What notice is required to end the agreement, and what happens to my roster?
